Materializing Ink Culture through Youth

Youth can be used to confront the loss of youth, and ink culture can help realize a sense of existence in an unknown world. The test of time is still accepted even without a correct answer.

Wu Chaojan (吳超然) and Pan Hsinhua’s (潘信華) Metamorphosis and Regeneration exhibition sees the participation of nine young artists born between 1980 and 1990: Lin Yenhsin (林衍馨), Lin Lili (林莉酈), Chen Juiwen (陳睿淵), Huang Chihcheng (黃至正), Yeh Tsaiwei (葉采薇), Tseng Chienying (曾建穎), Hsiao Peii (蕭珮宜), Han Yu (韓妤), and Su Huangsheng (蘇煌盛). They did not choose a single traditional material or concept to create so-called ink paintings. Instead, they used sentimental feelings to genuinely express proper appearances in the midst of conflict. Over the course of simulation, struggle, surrender, infiltration, integration and revival, the once lonely and aloof media of ink has been given an extraordinary power that is interwoven between the world of reality and imagination.

Categories of Taiwanese ink include traditional landscape patterns, Eastern paintings, literati paintings, abstract ink, modern ink, and so on. They contain profound yet ambiguous feelings amidst physical and inner imagery. From the beginning, ink lay hidden in the background of global culture. It is impossible to avoid the impact that Western art has had on the developmental process, nor its occasional marginal treatment. However, the historical significance of ink is undeniable, and it shall continue to have the opportunity to be valued in this era.

Carrying on the baptism of ink in the past, the young artists participating in this exhibition use different techniques of expression and energy to escape the limitations of tradition. In addition to linear elements produced by ink pens, the blending of gouache and other materials impose a new reading style for viewers that uses ink connotations to connect with the world.

Ink has not changed. What has changed is the way to return and use the past to complete the appearance of the present.
