Nest Lady: the Walker

Hsu, Wei-Ying’s solo exhibition, Nest Lady, presents oriental painting elements with impressive multifaceted contents and styles. She creates a contradictory vision experience to a figure and scene painting. The figure is dressed up with a gown and wearing a bird nest, walking in scenes of abnormal nature. Hsu’s artworks turn into a symbol, which carries certain information. The audiences can restructure the symbol according to their own interpretations toward the artwork, and this method makes the artwork into a multi-meaning creation.

This solo exhibition employs a transparent painting silk and the frame style that have enlarged the advantages of this material. The dress and the wild space in the paintings retain the nature of the painting silk, for aiming a further emphasis on the material’s elements. With different lighting and wall conditions in exhibition, the transparent silk creates different visual effects, and it establishes unexpected extensity, which differs from hand-drawing style. The human figure in the artworks is hand painted, which specifically and clearly describes the presentation of “human being”. On the other hand, the natural scenes of the artworks are made by printed arts; in Hsu’s works, the indirect and instrumental elements produce a contradictory style from the great nature.

Although the confusion of the painting styles and contents establish an alternative vision experience, all of them have been integrated into an oriental tone. The fuse of materials and painting styles as well as the chaos between the figure and scenes in this solo exhibition are expecting to guide the audience to think outside of the box. Talking about the creating methods of the images, the human figure is presented as “painting”, the nature as “making”, and the silk is “ready-made”, these three methods display three types of extensity. The three methods express the various types of extensity between the artist and artworks. At the same time, they together set up a unique idea towards the sense of space within the artworks themselves.
